  • Heartburn
  • Dyspepsia (Indigestion)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Belching, bloating and flatulence

What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition found in approximately 10-15% of the population, but it often goes undiagnosed. IBS is a gastrointestinal condition caused by dysfunction in the gut; it isn't a structural problem or a blockage. However, the disease is a real and treatable condition.

IBS is a chronic disorder with recurring symptoms that come and go over time. Some of the symptoms one might experience include including:

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Irregular bowel habits
  • Constipation or diarrhea or both

IBS is twice as common in women than in men, and the onset of symptoms usually occurs before the age of 50. IBS's exact cause isn't clear, but experts believe it is due to a gastrointestinal (GI) tract that is more sensitive, more active, or more sluggish than would be typically expected.

Occasional diarrhea or constipation are normal. However, if they are accompanied by abdominal pain or bloating that occurs for a period longer than three months, you should have an exam by a qualified gastroenterologist.
